A way to test a not installed car a/c compressor?

wanting to buy a used a/c compressor off a "friend of a friend's neigbour" (b/c i am on a fixed budget and the baby can't stand teh heat)but i wanna make sure the thing works before i pay him $$ is there a way to hook it up to something(battery or tester thingy ) to get to work or a way to get a volt reading or something ? is there something in particular i should look for to make sure it will run?

A way to test a not installed car a/c compressor?
No. Stop right where you are. Who's going to install this? What are you planning to do about getting it charged up? It's going to cost you quite a bit of money just to install the junky compressor.

Before you do anything else, go to acsource.net and look up the cost of brand new compressors. Most cars it's $200 or so.
Reply:THE LARGER PORT OF THE COMPRESSOR IS THE SUCTION AND YOU CAN CLOSE OFF THE OTHER PORT WHICH IS THE DISCHARGE AND TURN THE FRONT HUB OF THE CLUTCH.

THE SUCTION WILL SUCK AND THE DISCHARGE WILL BLOW.

CHECK THAT THE HUB WILL ENGAGED BY GROUNDING THE CASE AND RUNNING A HOT WIRE TO THE CLUTCH COIL, THE HUB SHOULD BE PULLED TOWARD THE CLUTCH WHEN 12 VOLTS IS APPLIED.

THIS WILL GIVE YOU A 50/50 ABOUT THE COMPRESSOR BUT THERE IS NO WAY TO TELL IF IT WILL COMPLETELY WORK UNTIL IT IS INSTALLED.

DON'T FORGET ABOUT REPLACING THE RECEIVER DRIER AS WELL AND YOU WILL HAVE TO HAVE IT PROFESSIONAL RECHARGED WITH OIL AND FREON.

thank you cards
